OBT Receives Grant From The New York Life Foundation

The New York Life Foundation has announced $150,000 in grants to the six winners of its 2010 Awards Program. Representing Westchester County and each of the five boroughs of New York City, each winning organization received a $25,000 award.
The Awards are presented annually to recognize nonprofits with budgets under $5 million whose programs support one of the following categories within the Foundation’s Nurturing the Children initiative: mentoring, safe places to learn and grow, and educational enhancement. This year, the Awards Program recognized educational enhancement programs for at-risk and disadvantaged youth. The winning projects help prepare young people for the workplace, post-secondary education, and responsible adulthood.
“We are pleased to recognize these six organizations for their strong commitment to improving the future success for at-risk youth in their local communities,” said Marlyn Torres, assistant vice president, New York Life. “Although these smaller organizations have limited funds and resources available, they are able to transform the lives of area youth and their families by offering confidence-building programs that prepare them for self-sufficiency and financial security by offering job training, placement and support services.”
The nonprofits and programs that received the Awards are:

Bronx: Neighborhood Coalition for Shelter – OPTIONS Program is a residential vocational and educational program at Louis Nine House that supports homeless youth who have aged out of foster care;
• Brooklyn: Opportunities for a Better Tomorrow – Youth Education, Training and Employment Program provides comprehensive job training and “practice” in the world of work;
• Manhattan: The Way to Work – The Way To Work Program provides young adults with in-depth educational assessments, classes, job placement and job retention services;
• Queens: Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation – Youth Leadership Development Program provides high school juniors and seniors with after-school activities focused on job readiness, internships, career development, college preparation, and free overnight trips to tour colleges in the metropolitan area;
• Staten Island: New York Center for Interpersonal Development – Achievement in Career and Education Program serves nonworking, out-of-school youth with GED preparation; personal counseling; and help with issues like anger management, unplanned pregnancy, and depression; and
• Westchester County: Groundwork Hudson Valley – The Green Team provides year-round projects to improve the surrounding areas and build students’ skills in leadership, public speaking, financial literacy and project management for at-risk students attending Riverside High School in Yonkers.
